Healthy update – week 1

As one of my New Year’s resolutions was to do a weekly post about my healthy goals, I thought I should get started!

I’m going to divide these posts up into nutrition, exercise and general wellbeing and let you know how I am getting on.

Nutrition

I tracked everything I ate on MyFitnessPal this week, which was a good start! I am still struggling with snacking healthily as pregnancy has given me a terrible sweet tooth, but I have overall stuck to my calorie goal. Obviously I’m not trying to lose weight, but its important not to overeat or undereat in pregnancy and it’s good to know I am on track. I ate the right amount of protein, and I ate a piece of fruit every day (I eat tonnes of veg but do struggle with fruit!)
My fats and sugars were way over what they should be though so I’m going to have to work on that. In my defence, it was partly because we were still eating up yummy chocs and cake after Christmas but that’s all gone now.

We also got back into the swing of meal planning and we’ve had some delicious fresh suppers – a Japanese salmon dish, full of veg, mushroom risotto, chorizo & cannelloni bean stew and roast chicken! If you’d like any of these recipes, give me a shout.

This week I’m aiming to take healthier snacks to work, to help me avoid the vending machine, continue planning and cooking meals with lots of fresh veggies, and drink more water and green tea. Pretty modest but hopefully achievable! I’d love to hear your healthy snack recommendations.

Exercise

I am severely limited at the moment as I am suffering badly with hip pain now I’m 32 weeks pregnant. I’m also anaemic so I get very breathless! I have been wearing my Fitbit and I can see that my step count is pretty low; I only exceeded 5000 steps a day on 2 days last week! However, one of those did involve being outside in the park with my godson so lots of fresh air and ambling. My plan for this week is to hopefully hit a higher step count with a greater number of ‘fairly active’ hours. I am also planning in some foam roller sessions to help ease my hips.

Wellbeing

I’ve not been doing much else towards improving my health except regularly taking my supplements, to be honest! This week, I’m aiming to keep a more regular routine and get to bed a bit earlier. I’m also limiting my screen time in the evening so I’ve banned mobiles and the iPad from our bedroom. I need to have a think about some other ways to relax and look after myself as well.

How are your new year resolutions coming on?

  1. Reading and foot rubs were my fav relax time when I was preggo. My feet were swollen badly all three times. Good on you for taking such awesome care of yourself to make healthy life changes for you and the new addition. Keep up the awesome work.

    • Foot rubs – now there’s a plan! :) I’m trying to keep healthy now as I know it will be harder with the little one around – I’m trying to set up some good habits now! :)
